Style over substance

The sad thing is that for the first 5 yrs of our r/ship, XN dressed really well. Not in an over the top way, but he had nice, understated clothes and I was very attracted to him.

When he started therapy a few months ago, he decided he was rediscovering himself again and used that excuse to buy himself a completely new wardrobe. He must have spent nearly £1500 on clothes in one month at this expensive shop.

In reality, I realise now, he'd just found someone else to mirror. He'd started hanging out with this group of 20 somethings in work (ten yrs younger than him - it's a bit tragic) and one of them is this idiot guy who DJs in a club every weekend, has a different "clone" girlfriend every week, etc etc.

XN's new wardrobe coincided with him hanging out with this guy. It struck me at the time as all a bit fake and contrived and, sadly for me, he went from looking sexy as hell to plain ridiculous - like he'd just bought all the clothes off the mannequins in the shop, a complete fashion victim.

It was then that I started to realise what a chameleon he is, and how he takes on the personality/attitude of whoever he's with. He couldn't see how stupid he looked. He thought he looked really cool and his little fan club in work told him he looked 'dapper'. Maybe I'm just not cool enough, but the whole "new image" thing was a big turn off for me. It just hit me at that point that it was all about style over substance with this guy.
